James Walter Hoerman, age 81, of Clarksville, Iowa, was born the son of Walter and Evelyn (Marston) Hoerman on March 12, 1930, in Cedar Falls, Iowa. He lived on a farm west of Allison, Iowa, until 1941 when they moved to a farm east of Clarksville. Jim went to school for two years in Plainfield before attending Clarksville and graduated from the Clarksville High School in 1949. Jim pitched for the baseball teams in both Plainfield and Clarksville. After graduation, Jim began driving stock car at the races all over Iowa from 1949 to 1969 and was also farming on a farm east of Clarksville.
On October 19, 1951, James was united in marriage with Marian Hirsch at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home and farmed with Jim’s parents northeast of Clarksville. When his dad passed away, he had to stop racing, to farm full time.
Jim served in the United States Army from 1952 until he was honorably discharged in 1953. Jim was a Sergeant during the Korean Conflict where he served overseas in Korea.
For many years Jim and Marian spent the summer months in Emily, Minnesota, where they managed an RV park. They would leave after the planting season was finished, and in October they would return to the farm in Clarksville, just in time for harvesting. Jim was a member of the First United Church of Christ ~ Pleasant Valley in rural Clarksville.
His grandchildren were an important part of his life. They enjoyed spending a lot of time together fishing and hunting. In his earlier years Jim hunted nearly everything and in his later years he mainly hunted deer. Jim was an avid walleye fisherman. A fun time was going “can hunting” with grandpa. For many years Jim loved to go snowmobiling with his friends and family.
